RAM(Random Access Memory)

RAM stands for Random Access Memory

It only store data temporally. When computer is on it stores the data of OS and softwares that you are using at the time. It flushes all data stored in RAM when you truned off the computer. It become likely new when you freshly boot your computer again.

RAM's main function is to store and quickly access data needed for current tasks.

Fact about RAM

  • The speed of RAM is measured in megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz (GHz).
  • Accessing data from RAM is significantly faster than accessing data from secondary storage devices like hard disk drives or solid-state drives (SSD)
  • RAMs are extreamly faster than ROM in reading and writing performance
  • Computer doesn't turn on without RAM
  • Ram types: DDR ,DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, DDR5(Latest Ram type)
  • RAM size (up to certain limit) boost  gaming, editing, and other heavy task performance  and provide smooth experiences.

What are the Types of RAM:

RAM Type Release Date Speed Range (MHz)
DDR1         2000          200 - 400
DDR2         2003          400 - 1066
DDR3         2007          800 - 2133
DDR4         2014          2133 - 3200
DDR5         2020          3200 - 8400

RAM vs ROM

RAM: RAM is a volatile memory that is used to store data and program instructions that are actively being accessed by the computer's processor. It provides fast read and write access, allowing for quick data manipulation and retrieval. RAM is temporary and loses its contents when power is turned off.

ROM: ROM is a non-volatile memory used for permanent storage of data or instructions. It contains firmware or software instructions that are permanently written during manufacturing and cannot be modified or erased by normal computer operations.

RAM Pricing

RAM CategoryCapacity RangeSpeed RangePrice Range (Approximate)
Entry-Level/Budget4GB - 8GBSlower speeds$30 - $60
Mid-Range8GB - 16GBModerate speeds$60 - $120
High-Performance16GB - 32GB+Faster speeds$120 and above

RAM Multitasking and Performance:

RAM plays a crucial role in multitasking, enabling you to run multiple applications simultaneously without experiencing significant slowdowns. When you switch between applications, the operating system swaps data in and out of RAM, ensuring quick access to the information you need. Inadequate RAM can lead to sluggish performance, frequent program crashes, and excessive reliance on virtual memory, which utilizes storage drives as a substitute for insufficient RAM.

At the end

RAM serves as a vital component in computer systems, providing fast and temporary storage for data and program instructions that are actively used by the processor. It plays a vital role in determining system performance and enables efficient multitasking and data processing.
